Find out in seconds whether it's the device or the settings
When a microphone goes silent at the start of a call, a controller starts drifting or a key stops working, the first question is always the same: is the hardware broken, or is something set up wrong? GearCheck answers that quickly. Each test shows exactly what your browser receives from the device — the same signal Zoom, Discord, Google Meet or a browser game gets. If the test works, the device is fine and the problem is in one app's settings. If it doesn't, the page walks you through the fixes for Windows, macOS, iPhone and Android.
The tests
- Mic test — live level meter, waveform and a 5-second recording you can play back to hear exactly what others hear.
- Webcam test — live preview, real resolution and measured frame rate, plus a full-resolution snapshot.
- Speaker test — left/right channel check, phase test, bass tones, a 20 Hz–20 kHz sweep and a tone generator.
- Keyboard test — every key lights up as you press it; also checks rollover (ghosting) and key chatter. There's a Mac version too.
- Mouse test — all five buttons, scroll wheel, double-click faults and polling rate. Want to compete? Try the CPS test.
- Gamepad test — buttons, analog triggers, stick drift and vibration, with versions for PS5, PS4, Xbox and Switch Pro controllers.
- Dead pixel test — full-screen colors to spot dead, stuck and hot pixels, plus a stuck-pixel fixer.
- Refresh rate test — check that your 120, 144 or 240 Hz monitor is really running at its rated speed.
- Screen resolution and touch screen test for every display detail and dead touch zones.
Private by design
Every test runs on your device. Camera video, microphone audio, key presses and controller input are processed in the browser and never sent to a server. Your browser always asks before a page can use your camera or microphone, and you can turn access off again from the address bar at any time.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to install anything?
No. Every test runs in your web browser using standard features built into Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. There is nothing to download, no plugin and no account.
Is it safe to allow camera and microphone access?
Yes. Audio and video are processed on your own device to draw the meter or show the preview, and are never uploaded — we have no server that could receive them. Access stops when you press Stop or close the tab, and you can revoke permission at any time in your browser’s site settings.
Why does a test say my device is not found?
Usually the device is unplugged, muted with a hardware switch, disabled in system privacy settings, or being used by another app such as Zoom, Teams or OBS. Each test page explains the exact steps for Windows, macOS, iPhone and Android.
Do the tests work on phones and tablets?
Yes. The mic, webcam, speaker, touch screen, dead pixel and screen resolution tests work on phones. The keyboard, mouse and controller tests work on phones too when you connect a keyboard, mouse or controller by USB or Bluetooth.
Are the results accurate?
They show exactly what your browser receives from the device, which is what websites, games and video calls see too. A few things are limited by the browser — for example some special keys are never reported — and each page says where that applies.
