How to test an Xbox controller on PC

  1. Connect with a cable, the Xbox Wireless Adapter, or Bluetooth (hold the pair button until the logo flashes).
  2. Press any button to make the controller appear.
  3. Press every button: A, B, X, Y, LB, RB, View, Menu, the Xbox button, Share (Series X|S) and the D-pad.
  4. Squeeze LT and RT gradually. The bars should go from 0% to 100% without jumps.
  5. Rotate the sticks fully, click LS and RS, then run the drift check and the rumble tests.

Common Xbox controller problems

Stick drift

Like all potentiometer sticks, Xbox sticks wear with use. Drift above 0.12 is worth fixing: rotate the stick firmly around its edge, blow compressed air under the stick, and raise the deadzone in game settings. Elite Series 2 owners can set stick deadzones in the Xbox Accessories app.

Bumper not clicking

LB and RB are a known weak point, particularly on Xbox One controllers — they may register only when pressed in the middle. Press each bumper at the outer edge, centre and inner edge to check.

Triggers not reaching 100%

If a trigger stops short of 100%, games may not register full throttle or aim. On Elite controllers, check the trigger stops (hair-trigger locks) on the back — they deliberately shorten the trigger travel.

Rumble not working

Rumble needs power: weak AA batteries or play-and-charge kits often disable vibration first. Also check that vibration is enabled under Settings → Accessibility → Controller on Xbox and in the Accessories app.

Frequently asked questions

How do I connect an Xbox controller to my PC?

Plug it in with a USB-C (Series X|S, Elite 2) or micro-USB (Xbox One) cable, or use Bluetooth: hold the pair button on top until the Xbox logo flashes fast, then add it in Windows under Settings → Bluetooth & devices. Very early Xbox One controllers need the Xbox Wireless Adapter.

Can I test the impulse triggers?

In Chrome and Edge on Windows, yes: if your controller supports it, a Trigger rumble button appears next to Test vibration. It runs the small motors inside LT and RT. Other browsers can only test the main rumble motors or none at all.

How do I check my Xbox controller for stick drift?

Press Check stick drift and keep your hands off the controller for three seconds. Readings above about 0.12 are noticeable. The Xbox Accessories app on Windows and Xbox also lets you remap buttons and, on Elite controllers, adjust stick deadzones.

Does it work with the Xbox Elite controller?

Yes. The back paddles don’t have their own buttons in the browser — they copy whichever button they are mapped to in the Xbox Accessories app, so pressing a paddle lights up that button.

Why does my Xbox controller keep disconnecting?

Weak batteries are the most common cause, followed by Bluetooth interference. Try fresh batteries, update the controller firmware through the Xbox Accessories app, or use a cable to rule out wireless problems.
