How to test a PS5 controller on PC or Mac
- Connect it. USB-C cable is the most reliable. For Bluetooth, hold Create + PS until the light bar flashes, then pair it in your computer's Bluetooth settings.
- Press any button on the controller with this page open — it appears straight away.
- Work through every button: ✕, ○, □, △, L1, R1, the D-pad, Create, Options, PS and the touchpad click. Each turns green once it works.
- Press L2 and R2 slowly. The bars should rise smoothly from 0% to 100%.
- Check the sticks: rotate them around the edge, click L3 and R3, then run the drift check.
Common DualSense problems
Stick drift
The DualSense uses potentiometer sticks that wear over time, and drift is the most common fault. If the drift check shows more than about 0.12 on a stick, try rotating it firmly around its edge a few dozen times and blowing compressed air under the rubber. On PS5 you can't change the system-wide deadzone, but many games let you raise it.
L2 / R2 not reaching 100%
If a trigger stops at 80–90%, adaptive trigger resistance may be stuck on from a game, or the trigger mechanism is worn. Turn trigger effects off under Settings → Accessories → Controllers → Trigger Effect Intensity on the PS5 and test again.
Buttons that stick or double-press
A face button that stays lit after you let go or flickers while held usually has dirt under it. With the controller off, press the button repeatedly while wiping around its edge with a little isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab.
Controller disconnects on PC
Bluetooth range and interference from USB 3 devices can drop the connection. Use a cable, or move the Bluetooth adapter to a front USB port with a short extension.

Frequently asked questions
How do I connect a PS5 controller to my PC?
With a USB-C cable: plug it in and it works immediately. With Bluetooth: hold the Create button and the PS button together until the light bar flashes rapidly, then pair “Wireless Controller” in Windows Bluetooth settings or on a Mac under System Settings → Bluetooth.
Can I test DualSense stick drift online?
Yes. Connect the controller, press any button, then press Check stick drift and keep your hands off for three seconds. A resting value above about 0.12 means noticeable drift; above 0.25 is severe and will move your character in games.
Does the DualSense vibration work in the browser?
Over USB in Chrome and Edge, the standard rumble usually works. The DualSense’s advanced haptics and adaptive triggers need game-specific support from the PS5 or PC games and cannot be tested by a website.
Why isn’t the touchpad or mute button shown?
Browsers report the touchpad click as one button, but not finger position on the touchpad, the mute button, the motion sensors or the light bar. They work separately from the standard controller layout that websites can read.
Does this work for the DualSense Edge?
Yes for the standard buttons, triggers and sticks. The Edge’s back paddles and Fn buttons are usually mapped to other buttons by the controller profile, so press them and see which button lights up.
